Classifications
The Classifications module stores information on the asset and inventory classifications maintained in your organization.
-
Asset Classifications are templates of assets maintained in your organization. Numerous assets typically exist for each asset classification. For example, your organization might have a single asset classification for Fire Extinguishers, even though fifty Fire Extinguisher assets are maintained. This approach allows your organization to define important information that applies to all fire extinguishers in one place.
Asset Classifications are used as a template to create default values for each asset created from the given classification. For example, you can create default specifications, contracts and labor that are automatically assigned to any new asset created using the classification. In addition, classification records can be defined so that all assets created use the same naming convention and/or share numerous asset details (such as model information). If you make changes to an asset classification record, a feature also exists to update all existing assets associated with the classification.
-
Inventory Classifications provide a hierarchical structure for organizations with complex inventory systems. Most organizations utilize a more basic inventory structure, using only one category to organize their inventory items. Some organizations, however, require a more complex hierarchical structure. For these organizations, the Classifications module can be used to maintain their inventory structure.
-
Failure Classifications allow you to create a class with a set of problem, cause, and remedy codes. You can then link the failure class to an asset classification or a work order, streamlining the process of assigning appropriate failure codes to an asset.
Access the Classifications module:
-
Click the Open icon on the toolbar or click the Module Menu control.
The Module menu displays.
-
Click the word Classifications.
-
If you accessed the Module menu from the Open option on the toolbar, the Classification list and the Classification Work Center Home Page display.
-
If you accessed the Module menu from the Module Menu control, the Classification list displays, but the content of the Work Center does not change until you have selected a record.
The classifications defined for your organization are listed in the Classification List. The Classification List is similar to the Asset List in that it displays available records in a hierarchical fashion with special conventions for selecting and locating records.
To learn how to work with the List pane, see the List Pane article.
